About this Course
The IES offers Educational Webinars throughout the year, purposefully spanning a broad range of topics and speaker expertise. This was a live webinar, now available as an archived webinar and CEU course.
Description: As the hospital experience transforms from primarily “sterile” patient environments to more comfortable, curative spaces focused on well-being and support, ongoing research continues into the connection between light and health. This research is impacting the way designers technologies to enhance the hospital experience.
Lighting, daylighting, and control can play critical roles in healthcare spaces, and in this panel, we will explore emerging ideas from industry thought leaders including best practices for hospital lighting design, where lighting design is headed, and different approaches to integrated lighting technology.
Panelists will engage in a robust presentation using predefined questions as prompts, and featuring back-and-forth discussion between panelists. The last 10 minutes of the presentation will be open to audience questions.

Craig Casey
Senior Building Science Engineer
Craig Casey is a Senior Building Science Engineer at LutronElectronics Co., Inc. He conducts applied research on energy and humanbenefits of lighting and daylighting controls. He has presented multipletimes at the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Annual Conference as well as avariety of local IES section events. He has presented at LightFair the pastthree years. Craig currently sits on two committees within theIlluminating Engineering Society and chairs the AERC committee on Attachment OperationSchedules. Craig received the IES Presidential Award in 2016 for chairingthe Conference Steering Committee for the 2015 IES Annual Conference.

Andrea Wilkerson
Lighting Engineer
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Andrea Wilkerson is a senior lighting research engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, focusing on the evaluation of emerging lighting technology in support of the U.S. Department of Energy Lighting Program. She earned her doctorate from Penn State and her BS and MAE from the University of Nebraska in the respective architectural engineering programs.

Karen Murphy
Senior Professional Associate
Karen Murphy LC, IALD, LEED AP is a senior professional associate with HDR in Princeton NJ, and has been an architectural lighting designer for over 30 years. She currently chairs the IES Healthcare Lighting Committee and is a member of the IES Light + Design Committee. Karen served as a technical reviewer for the National Institute of Health’s 2016 edition of the Design Requirements Manual, and is part of the lighting task force with the Facilities Guidelines Institute. In addition to decades of project work with large healthcare, research, and government agencies, she has developed lighting guidelines for the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs, NY Presbyterian, and Proctor & Gamble, as well as written the outdoor lighting ordinance for Hopewell Township NJ. Karen has received multiple design awards and has been published in Architectural Lighting, Facility Design & Management, EC&M, and ALN. She is a graduate of Penn State University’s architectural engineering program with a specialty in lighting and electrical systems.

C. Brooke Silber
Lighting Studio Director

C. Brooke Silber is BR+A's Lighting Studio Director housed in the New York City Office. Brooke has over 25 years of experience as an architectural and landscape lighting designer with a passion for large-scale public and private projects. Her award-winning portfolio includes a diversity of project types including historic preservation, corporate interiors, civic buildings, academic institutions, security command centers, transportation facilities, museums, retail, hospitality, religious, and residential. In addition to chairing the joint IES/Avixa ANSI standard committee for Lighting for Videoconferencing and Multi-media Spaces, she is part-time faculty at Parsons The New School of Constructed Environments for their Master's program in Lighting. Brooke is an active member of IES and is a frequent speaker at many industry events such as LEDucation and Lightfair.

John Curran
Department Director - Design and Construction
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
John Curran joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1999 in the Design and Construction Department and was named the department’s director in 2001. He is responsible for all aspects of design and construction for St. Jude, including the construction of the $412 million Advanced Research Center. Curran manages a team of nine who provide capital improvement and renovation services valued at approximately $150 million per year. Curran’s acumen not only guides planning the design of new facilities and renovations projects, but also the success of moving departments, minimizing inconvenience to staff without disrupting the flow of patient care or research activities. Under his direction, the hospital campus and out parcels have grown to 114 acres and over 5 million gross square feet. In the two decades, Curran has organized additions to St. Jude, including the Tri Delta Place, the Target House complex, the $16 million renovation of the St. Jude cafeteria, known as the Kay Kafe, the Chili’s Care Center, Kay Research and Care Center including the Red Frog Proton Therapy Center, Kay Research and Care Center Inpatient Units, Garage 2, Garage 3, Data Center, Advanced Research Center, NMR facility, Kryo-EM Facility and the Shared Resource Center. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Christian Brothers University in 1987.
