Trailblazers and Icons is an inspiring and informative series of interviews with some of the lighting communities’ most recognized thought leaders, teachers and practitioners and others. The interviews elicit from each interviewee their major contributions to lighting and their perspective on some of the major issues currently facing the lighting industry. This video features Rita Harrold.
Rita Harrold became the first woman President of the IES in 1985, seventy-nine years after the IES was established. Rita discusses her trailblazing career which includes a long turn as the IES Director of Knowledge.

Rita Harrold
Former IES President & Director of Knowledge
Rita Harrold served as the Illuminating Engineering Society’s 81st President from 1985 – 1986 and was the first woman to hold this title. In 1992, she joined the IES staff as Director of Educational and Technical Development, now referred to as Director of Technology. During the course of her career, Harrold served as the Society’s principal liaison to the lighting industry, developed its educational program offerings, and oversaw the preparation and production of hundreds of IES technical documents and standards through to publication.
