About this Seminar Session

Each year, the IES hosts an Annual Conference. In 2021, the Annual Conference is offered virtually.

Description: Design is about and significant to people! It is when this simple concept is understood that design thought can move from the mundane and archaic to something that is meaningful and inspiring. But people are different. It's intrinsic to our biology and psychology. And people are complex, it's what makes us unique and fascinating. It's therefore imperative for us to understand the nuances of human thought before designing. This is an immersive experience, partly intuitive and partly theoretical. This session reviews some renowned designers' approach to context in their designs and then presents a few completed and work-in-progress projects, to understand and develop these context-based design solutions. The presentation would focus on the approach and the process more and the results less, with the intention that those attending are able to distil their own process and develop an intuitive template for ascertaining context of place, time, application, philosophy and motivation.

Lirio Lopez Lighting Design Consultants

Linus has been a partner in Lirio Lopez Lighting Design Consultants since earning his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in 1991. He has been responsible for engaging with clients and design teams to understand requirements and then design, specify and quantify the electrical services to meet those requirements. He has worked on a wide spectrum of projects from 750 bed hospitals and Super Deluxe Hotels to Airport Hangars and Delhi Metro Stations, from large scale housing communities to individual residences and in a wide variety of commercial and entertainment projects. Most of the projects have had a high level of sustainable design (compliance to LEED - USGBC and IGBC, and GRIHA) from an electrical and lighting perspective and some have been awarded and received recognition for this.

With a Master’s degree in Architectural Lighting and Design Management from Hochschule Wismar, Linus has also successfully designed and commissioned over a hundred architectural lighting design projects. The transition from core electrical engineering to the more creative aspects of lighting design began with smaller night clubs and art galleries and has slowly grown over a period of 21 years to include corporate offices, institutional campuses, multi-dwelling residential developments, museums, heritage monuments and hospitality & fine dining in India and abroad.

Linus has presented his work and research at various professional international conferences in Macao, Paris, Singapore and Barcelona at PLDC and IALD and other lighting design events. He has conducted a number of workshops on design and lighting in India and in Hungary. He is currently serving as visiting faculty to the prestigious School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, but has also conducted workshops and master classes at other design schools in India.
