About this Course and Tool
The IES offers Educational Webinars throughout the year, purposefully spanning a broad range of topics and speaker expertise.
Description: This session provides an analysis of 13 lighting system integration use cases, with a focus on how the integration improves the functionality and value of the lighting and/or other systems, and the interoperability challenges that must be addressed to facilitate integration. A deeper dive into the top 2-3 opportunities revealed by the analysis is presented, along with a review of industry stakeholder feedback.
Key:
Martin Mercier
Senior Product Manager
Martin Mercier is a senior product manager for advanced lighting technology systems at Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting) a global lighting manufacturer leading the lighting industry revolution into IoT driven solutions, including solar lighting. Since his early days in R&D, he contributed to develop and to launch patented first Philips Lighting LED light engine plate-form deployed in multiple brands and manufacturing sites across Americas. Shortly after he helped to bring successfully to market early cloud-based technology lighting systems for public and private customers in Americas. His insights and ideas helped to strengthen overall effort in pioneering new technologies for Signify and the lighting industry in general bringing problem-solving solutions for our smart city and smart building customers. In order to achieve goals, he is involved and leading various communities such as NEMA ANSI which help him to constantly establishing valuable relationships to share and advance his knowledge and competencies. Detail-oriented and technically gifted, Martin has studied Electrical Engineering at the renowned École de technology supérieure – the largest engineering school in Quebec.
Michael Poplawski
Senior Engineer
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Michael Poplawski is a senior engineer, principal investigator, and data-driven design team lead at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he primarily supports the U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office. His research efforts focus on developing digital tools and workflows and semantic models that facilitate building system integration and the use of software applications that support system configuration, operational energy management and maintenance, electric grid interaction, and other data-driven use cases.
Axel Pearson
Project Manager
PNNL
Axel Pearson joined PNNL in 2022 as a Project Manager. Much of his work focuses on energy efficient lighting and controls, workforce development, and building energy efficiency. He also has experience with codes and standards development, lighting auditing, utility incentive programs, and energy education. Axel holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in Environmental Studies, a master’s degree in Environmental Management from the University of San Francisco. His certifications include the Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute since 2024 and Lighting Certified (LC) by the NCQLP since 2017.
Simon Slupik
Simon has been with the lighting industry for 15 years. He has designed the architectures for the next generation wireless lighting control systems, known today as Bluetooth Networked Lighting Controls (Bluetooth NLC).
Simon is a strong contributor to open standards. He has been involved with Bluetooth since 2012 (chairing the Bluetooth Mesh Working Group since 2015) and with DALI Alliance since 2016 (and leading the design of the unified architecture of DALI/D4i + Bluetooth NLC). Simon’s recent work includes the Bluetooth NLC HVAC Integration Profile which is in the final development stage.
