About this Course

Lights of the Round is one course in the IES's Indispensable Lighting Series. This series was designed to provide members, educators and the general public access to information about quality lighting. Lights of the Round was created by the IES and AIA, the course consists of two parts, and they can be purchased individually or as a package.

Description: A group of industry leaders representing Architects, Distributors, Engineers, Lighting Designers, Lighting Controls Specialists and Lighting Manufacturers gather to discuss current lighting industry topics. The panelists describe the lighting design process, lighting team dynamics, and supply chain communication. With the adoption of LED, the group covers expectation management as well as changes to lighting specification and project management.  

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course learners will be able to...
1. Understand the roles and responsibilities of; engineers, architects, lighting designers, distributors, manufacturers and lighting control specialists in the lighting design process.
2. Explore the dynamics of the post-bid supply chain including pricing, substitutions and communication.
3. Identify the importance of a lighting designer, and describe the influence they have on the team, and project.
4. Explore factors of the lighting control design process, including key moments in the specification process, interoperability concerns, and the role of a Lighting Control Specialist.

Randy Burkett, FIALD, FIES, LC

Lighting Designer

Randy Burkett is the President and Design Principal of Randy Burkett Lighting Design, Inc. As Principal he establishes design direction and oversees the management of the firm’s projects. Since he began professional practice, he has been responsible for the lighting of numerous national and international commissions. His diverse portfolio comprises museums, retail malls and stores, corporate headquarters, offices, health care and laboratory facilities, urban parks, site developments and building exteriors. Before establishing his own firm in 1988, he was Director of Lighting Design at Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum.Randy is an active member of the International Association of Lighting Designers and is a past President and former Board member of the organization. He is engaged in Illuminating Engineering Society Technical and Design committees including the Color Metric Task Force, Quality of the Visual Environment, and Lighting for Outdoor Public Spaces. He has authored design and technical articles appearing in publications in over 40 countries. He is a frequent speaker to professional organizations on a variety of lighting design subjects and has served as an instructor at the University of Colorado in Boulder and Maryville University in St. Louis. He is currently a member of the Adjunct Faculty of Washington University’s Graduate School of Architecture.

Kevin J. Flynn, FAIA, NCARB

Architect

Kevin J. Flynn is executive vice president of Kiku Obata & Company, a design consultancy specializing in brands, communications and environments. The studio creates identities, publications, packaging, websites, signage, architecture and public spaces. Projects Kevin has worked on include Madrid Xanadu, the Southeast Missourian, Indiana Avenue Cultural District, City of Mt. Sterling Il., Dot Foods, and the St. Louis Art Museum. Over the last ten years, the firm has orchestrated the expansion of The Loop in St. Louis by completing eight new or historical renovation projects. The American Planning Association (APA) selected The Loop as “One of the 10 Great Streets in America” in 2007. 

Kevin graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s of Environmental Design in 1977, where he was the recipient of the Alpha Rho Chi Medal and went on to earn his Masters of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis in 1979. Now licensed in 20 states. He was a member of the AIA’s U.S. House of Representatives Capitol Complex Design Assessment (2008), chaired the AIA’s Committee on Leadership Education Advisory Group (2007), and served on the AIA National Board of Directors as the Central States Regional Director. He is also active in the Illuminating Engineering Society of (IES); where he served as national president (2006-2007), only the second architect in the 100+ year history of the organization to hold that position. Kevin currently serves on the University of Kansas’s School of Architecture Advisory Board.

Kristina Martin, LC, PE

Engineer

Kristina Martin joined The Engineering Enterprise in 1989 and was appointed Principal of the firm in 2000. Ms. Martin has been credited with a long list of successful, high profile healthcare, government, hospitality and educational projects including the award winning Moscone West Convention Center. Besides being a P.E., Ms. Martin also holds a Lighting Certification (LC) and is an LEED Accredited Professional. Her background in lighting, sustainable design and her degree in Architectural Engineering givers her the rare ability to approach each project with an unsurpassed detail in engineering and systems coordination while maintaining a cutting edge creativity in lighting and interior design. Ms Martin enjoys working closely with Architects, Owners and design professionals to create beautifully illuminate, energy conscious and cost effective buildings.

Craig Casey

Senior Building Science Engineer

Craig Casey is a Senior Building Science Engineer at LutronElectronics Co., Inc.  He conducts applied research on energy and humanbenefits of lighting and daylighting controls.  He has presented multipletimes at the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Annual Conference as well as avariety of local IES section events. He has presented at LightFair the pastthree years.  Craig currently sits on two committees within theIlluminating Engineering Society and chairs the AERC committee on Attachment OperationSchedules.  Craig received the IES Presidential Award in 2016 for chairingthe Conference Steering Committee for the 2015 IES Annual Conference.

Carol McGlogan

CEO

Carol McGlogan is the President and CEO of Electro-Federation Canada.  Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) is a national, not-for-profit industry association representing over 220 member companies that manufacture, distribute and sell electrical products. 

Carol joined EFC in April 2017. Prior to this role, Carol spent much of her career in the lighting industry with Philips and Canlyte and had executive responsibilities in marketing, sales and channel management. During Carol’s time in the lighting industry, she spent several years volunteering with EFC as Chair of the Supply & Distribution Council in 2002 and Chairman of the Board in 2006.  As President & CEO of EFC, Carol guides the association’s overall strategic vision. A significant part of this vision is to educate and inspire members about the changing electrical industry by offering programs and services that help member companies compete, lead and grow.

Carol graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario with a Bachelor of Business Admin degree. She is married with four children and lives in Oakville, Ontario.
