Description: Join us for a panel focusing on some of the research being done to improve safety on the road and in the field. The projects being showcased include adaptive roadway lighting, updates to the FHWA report on mid-block cross-walks, and an assessment of LED exit signs.

Ron Gibbons
Director of the Center for Infrastructure Based Safety Systems

Ron Gibbons is the Director of the Center for Infrastructure Based Safety Systems (CIBSS) at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). He is the Institute’s lead lighting research scientist. He is currently the PI on projects investigating the impact of outdoor lighting on human health, the Spectral Effects of new light sources on roadways, the visibility of police vehicles and is the subject matter lead for the FHWA office Safety IDIQ contract. Dr. Gibbons is also an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Tech. Gibbons is the author of over 80 published papers on roadway lighting, photometry, and target visibility. He is a past Director of Division 4 of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and a past president of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

John D. Bullough, Ph.D., FIES is a program director at the Light and Health Research Center, part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His research focuses on visual performance, disability and discomfort glare, transportation lighting and safety, human factors and circadian rhythms.

Joseph Cheung

Joseph Cheung is a Senior Safety Engineer in the FHWA Office of Safety, Safety Technologies. His program responsibilities include Visibility – Roadway lighting, Pavement Safety – Pavement Friction. He has both a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree in Traffic and Transportation from the University of Maryland and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland. He is a member of Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), Institute of Transportation Engineers and is currently serving as Secretary of the AASHTO Joint Technical Program sub-committee on Lighting. He is currently co-leading the FHWA EDC 7 Safety initiative – Nighttime Visibility for Safety.
